Dental Day
Dental Day is now an annual tradition in the Panhandle -- an opportunity for children who may not see a dentist regularly to get a thorough check up on their teeth, mouth and gums. Dental Day is coordinated through the Panhandle Public Health District, area dentists, local hospitals and health services and schools to target children who require the dental care made affordable by volunteers such as local dentists and University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry students, staff and faculty.
Dental Day began as a challenge for dental college deans to provide outreach into their communities. Dr. David Brown, UNMC associate dean, said their challenge focused not only on the unmet needs of the children in Nebraska, but also the inequalities of distribution for dental professionals across the state. Underserved children in Nebraska are three to four times less likely to have dental coverage as those children who are covered by regular health insurance through their parent's employers.
The 2010 Dental Days will be June 4-5 in Alliance, Chadron, Sidney, and Gordon. Pre-exams will begin in April and run through May 15 by participating local dentists. For those who qualify there is no charge to receive the service and, in some cases, transportation may be available.
Available space will be filled on a first-come first-served system.
